An All-English December 1st Program

It’s an All-English lineup on the LSO’s radio show, the Joy of the Orchestra with the LaGrange Symphony’s Richard Prior (December 1st episode).  This show airs Tuesday, December 1st, 2020 at 7:30 PM on WELR (Eagle 102.3 FM).  The composer of each piece in this episode has ties to England.  Including works from Walton, Elgar, and Prior, you will be taken on an exhilarating journey.  Beginning with music composed for the 1942 film The First of the Few, (known in the US as simply “Spitfire”) you will hear the majestic Spitfire airplane soaring high in the Prelude and Fugue. This may be familiar territory as this show also includes Elgar’s Enigma Variations. The LaGrange Symphony Orchestra performed the Walton and the Elgar works on September 27th, 2016.  That concert was notably entitled “AIR”, and a review of that performance can be viewed HERE.  Like Spitfire, this week’s show includes another piece with a very film-like quality.  It is a piece composed in 2013 by your host, Richard Prior, intriguingly titled of shadow and light.  Tune-in on this first day of December as we take to the air, travel through numerous variations, and capture shadow and light thru this all-English music.

What will we hear this week?

William Walton’s Spitfire Prelude and Fugue, with Paul Daniels conducting the English National Orchestra.
Conductor, Georg Solti leading the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations.
Richard Prior’s  …of shadow and light… with Robert Spano conducting the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
