About Daveda Karanas

Daveda Karanas with the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra

For Elgar’s strikingly beautiful song cycle, Sea Pictures, we are joined by special guest artist, mezzo-soprano Daveda Karanas.

With “capacious power” and “a voice lustrous and exciting” (San Francisco Chronicle), Greek-American mezzo-soprano Daveda Karanas uses her signature sympathy and richness to create vivid character portrayals on the world’s most important stages.

She has earned particular acclaim for interpretations of Wagner roles, including the roles of Kundry in Parsifal (Lyric Opera of Chicago), Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde (Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra), Fricka in Das Rheingold (Arizona Opera), Second Norn in Götterdämmerung (San Francisco Opera), and Waltraute in Die Walküre and Götterdämmerung (San Francisco Opera).

Karanas has also enjoyed successes in Verdi roles such as Amneris in Aida (Arizona Opera, Vancouver Opera, Glimmerglass Festival) and Azucena in Il Trovatore (Opera Grand Rapids), Slavic roles such as Marfa in Khovanschchina (Oper Frankfurt), Mamka in Boris Godunov (San Francisco Opera), and Ježibaba in Rusalka (Arizona Opera), and modern repertoire including Judit in Bluebeard’s Castle (Maggio Musicale Fiorentino), Mother Marie in Dialogues of the Carmelites (Opera Theatre of St. Louis) and Liese in The Passenger (Lyric Opera of Chicago, Detroit Opera, Florida Grand Opera, Israeli Opera, Teatro Real).
