VARIATIONS CONCERT – DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF MAJOR GENERAL DONALD J. HARLIN
AUGUST 14, 1935 – FEBRUARY 9, 2015
Chaplain Major General Donald J. Harlin, U. S. Air Force (Retired) moved to LaGrange in 2006 following a military career that spanned thirty years. He was an ordained minister of the American Baptist Church and held a Bachelor of Science degree from Nyack College, Master of Divinity degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Divinity degree (honorary) from Nyack College. He was a graduate of the Air Forces’ Air Command and Staff College and the Hadley School for the Blind.
Chaplain Harlin was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to the many people he touched throughout his life and career. Major General Harlin was honored during his career with several distinguished service medals and was the only chaplain to receive the Outstanding Military Chaplain of the Year award twice.
But it is because of his work as an active and supportive member of our community and our Symphony Board of Directors that we honor him tonight by dedicating this concert to his memory. Major General Harlin loved music and he loved children. It is fitting that tonight’s concert be dedicated to him.
Major General Harlin and his devoted wife Carol were strong advocates of music and youth. They could be seen often in attendance at our many functions, always accompanied by one of his faithful guide dogs and loyal canine companions, Valerie or Goldie. They loved music too. Chaplin Harlin was laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery, a fitting tribute for one who served our nation with such honor and distinction.
