Three Days, One Extraordinary Overture

The story begins in 1954, when an important concert was being planned at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre to commemorate the 37th anniversary of the October Revolution. Shostakovich was serving as a music consultant to the Bolshoi, and the conductor wanted something fresh, bright, and celebratory to open the program. He turned to Shostakovich with an extraordinary deadline: three days.

Astounding Speed Clear Direction

Shostakovich’s ability to compose at astonishing speed was legendary. One of his friends even commented that the composer was able to “talk, make jokes, and compose simultaneously.”

Despite the remarkably short time in which this piece was written, the result is anything but hurried. From its brilliant opening to its exuberant conclusion, Festive Overture is music filled with energy, brilliance, and celebration. It is exactly what the conductor wanted and immediately established a sense of occasion.

The overture has since become one of Shostakovich’s most recognizable and frequently performed orchestral works. Its combination of driving rhythms, brilliant brass writing, and sweeping orchestral sound makes it an ideal concert opener—and an especially fitting way to launch a new LSO season.

Setting the Stage

For the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra, Festive Overture will set the stage for an evening that travels through three very different musical worlds. Shostakovich’s exuberance will be followed by the lyricism and virtuosity of Benjamin Britten’s Piano Concerto, performed by Ruxi Wang, before the orchestra turns to the warmth and emotional depth of Brahms’ Symphony No. 3.
