The Moments of Music Begin
On September 22, the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Richard Prior, opens its 2026–27 season with their concert “Symphony Spectacular”. (7:30 PM Callaway Auditorium, LaGrange, GA)

More about September’s Concert
September 22nd’s “Symphony Spectacular” concert will provide an evening of beautiful classics by Dmitri Shostakovich, Benjamin Britten, and Johannes Brahms. These pieces contain spectacular moments of music that are not simply heard, they are experienced—sometimes in a burst of energy, sometimes in a quiet touching passage, sometimes in a familiar melody or something completely new. It will be a terrific opening to a season centered around “moments of music”.
Below is a brief overview of the September 22 concert:
Shostakovich
The program begins with Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, an exuberant work that wastes no time making its presence known. Written in just three days during Shostakovich’s time as a music consultant to the Bolshoi Ballet, the overture has become a favorite of orchestras and audiences around the world.
Britten
The evening continues with Benjamin Britten’s Piano Concerto, performed by award-winning pianist Ruxi Wang, winner of the 2024 LSO Young Artist Competition. Miss Wang returns to the LaGrange stage bringing her expressive depth, technical brilliance, and remarkable artistry to one of Britten’s most engaging concert works. This performance also recognizes the 50th anniversary of Britten’s passing.
Brahms
The season-opening program concludes with Brahms’ Symphony No. 3 in F major, perhaps the most personal of the composer’s four symphonies. Beneath its beauty is a recurring musical idea that has been associated with the words frei aber froh—“free but happy”—a phrase that offers a fascinating window into the emotional world behind the music.
