Tuesday’s 2018/19 season opening concert for the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra features Alexandra Shatalov Prior, LSO oboe principal. She will perform the Mozart Oboe Concerto. This piece was written by Mozart originally in 1777, for his friend, oboist Giuseppe Ferlendis, in C Major. Mozart later reworked the piece for another instrument. It may sound familiar to you as his Flute Concerto in D Major.
Alexandra Shatalova Prior is principal oboe of the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra and Oboe Artist Affiliate at Emory University. She appears regularly in performances with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Alexandra’s international performing career has included concerts with the National Jeugd Orkest of the Netherlands, the St. Petersburg Chamber Orchestra and the American Institute for Musical Studies in venues such as the Berlin Konzerthaus, Amsterdam Musiekgebouw, St. Petersburg Mariinsky Theater and the Graz Stefaniensaal. Alexandra received her doctorate and masters from the Eastman School of Music, where she studied with Richard Killmer. She has been on faculty teaching oboe and arts administration at Nazareth College, the SUNY Potsdam Crane School of Music and the Eastman Community Music School, where she received the 2012 Jack L. Frank Award for Excellence in Teaching. Alexandra resides in Atlanta, GA with her husband, composer and conductor Richard Prior.
Also on the program for the evening are two pieces chosen in celebration of Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday. First is Bernstein’s own Overture to Candide, and the second is one of Bernstein’s favorite pieces during his conducting career, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A Major. You can read more about American icon Leonard Bernstein HERE. The passion and personality that were such a part of his life are sure to come through in this concert. You won’t want to miss celebrating his 100th birthday and hearing these special pieces performed Tuesday September 25th, 7:30 PM at Callaway Auditorium, LaGrange, GA. A reception will be held immediately after the concert at the LaGrange-Troup Chamber of Commerce. Season tickets are a great value, and are only offered until September 25th, so don’t delay.
