Walton: Spitfire Prelude and Fugue
Prior: Concerto for Flute and Orchestra
Elgar: Enigma Variations
We open our season with William Walton’s Spitfire Prelude and Fugue, music that he composed in 1942 for the wartime film The First of the Few. This film celebrates the history of the men and women who developed the Spitfire fighter plane, arguably one of the most iconic planes of the Second World War. Walton’s breath-taking music in the Fugue underscores the plane soaring through the clouds and performing stunning acrobatics as it powers effortlessly through the sky. This is preceded by a stirring march – the Prelude – that clearly reveals Walton assuming the musical mantle of Elgar, as we hear music that evokes the famous Pomp and Circumstance marches. The program also includes the world premiere of Richard Prior’s Concerto for Flute and Orchestra with renowned guest soloist, Jonathan Keeble. Finishing the evening with Elgar’s Enigma Variations that include among other gems, the variation Nimrod. This will be a night you won’t want to miss!
